Project Description:

The Escondida copper-gold-silver mine is located in the arid, northern Atacama Desert of Chile about 160km southeast the port of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 3,050m above sea level.

Operator and majority owner BHP Billiton want to replace the Los Colorados concentrator at the Escondida mine with a new concentrator at Laguna Seca to produce copper as well as quantities of gold and silver. The project expects to cost US$3.8 billion. 

With a capacity of 152,000 metric tons per day, the new concentrator at Escondida will be the world's highest-capacity, single-line copper concentrator at the largest copper mine on Earth.
